da betsul: Being Sunderland manager can be one of the more gloomy jobs in the top flight of English football. Martin O’Neill and Sam Allardyce have both had to do rescue jobs at the club and the Black Cats don’t seem to have a great deal of ambition.
da dobrowin: It’s up to you, will you be like Di Canio, O’Neill, or are you going to take the Mackems to the next level?
What you start with…
The Sunderland board are pretty tight with you start with. The big wigs at the club give you absolutely nothing to spend on recruiting new players and you will need to move some players on if you are to bring anyone in because of the tight wage restrictions.
What’s expected…
Premier League – Unsurprisingly, the board just want to see you avoid relegation and, given what’s happened in recent seasons, can you blame them?
FA Cup – The cups are a pretty minor thing for the Sunderland board, but initially they would be happy with making it to the fifth round of the FA Cup.
Capital One Cup – The board aren’t too fussed whatever happens in the Capital One Cup, but avoiding embarrassment to lower league opposition is vital.
Three to buy…
Kazenga Lualua – Signing an ex-Magpie wouldn’t be the best start to your tenure, but Lualua would be an ideal budget backup to Lens and Johnson.
Marcos Rojo – Continue the Manchester United reject theme by signing Marcos Rojo. The Argentine defender will give your wage budget an almighty hit, but his pace from centre-back would assist John O’Shea or Kaboul and he could cover at left-back if needed.
Michy Batshuayi – Bigger clubs will be snooping around for Batshuayi, but the Belgian striker could be lured to the Stadium of Light by the prospect of first team football. Sales will be needed to raise the funds for Batshuayi but he could work well alongside Defoe.
Three to sell…
Danny Graham – Fletcher’s future should be in your consideration when you take over the club, but Graham should be straight out the door. Even if you are playing two up front, Graham struggles for goals on FM as much as he does in real life.
Valentin Roberge – A new centre-back is an absolute necessity for the Black Cats and moving Roberge on is a good way of funding a new move.
Wes Brown – It has to be a matter of Brown or O’Shea and the Irishman is comfortably ahead of Brown in the pecking order. Their lack of pace would make a Brown-O’Shea partnership suicidal.
Youngsters…
Duncan Watmore – His stats start at a surprisingly low level, but Watmore is likely to see a boost in his ratings soon. The winger has a lot of pace and, considering his step up to the first team, should see a jump in his potential.
Oscar Krusnell – Van-Aanholt isn’t exactly the perfect left-back, so Krusnell – as a rare bright spark in the academy – might be worth giving some minutes.
Jordan Pickford – Considering the inconsistencies of Pantilimon and Mannone, Pickford has the potential to be your first choice keeper by the end of your first season. The youngster has immense potential and develops rapidly whilst out on loan.
