Brazilian media outlet UOL Esporte reported last week that Everton are interested in signing Ajax attacker David Neres, but Toffees fans on Twitter are certainly feeling more pessimistic about their chances of getting him following his latest display.
The 22-year-old started in attack for his side in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie against Juventus in Amsterdam on Wednesday night, and he found the net with a fine curling strike just after half-time.
Neres, who can play on either wing or as a central attacking midfielder – something that would surely appeal to the Merseyside outfit and manager Marco Silva – has scored 12 goals and provided a further 15 assists in 44 appearances in all competitions for the Dutch giants this term.
Should he arrive at Goodison Park he would surely be competing with the likes of Bernard and Richarlison, both of whom he shares an agent with, for a spot in the starting XI, but the larger clubs in Europe may well be taking a closer look at him now he has delivered on the biggest stage.
That is something that hasn’t gone unnoticed by Everton supporters, with one saying him finding the net is the “worst thing that could have happened”, while another was equally negative saying “think that’s ended our chances of getting him”.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
